Du Pas de Bellecombe, la descente dans l’enclos prend deux heures. Il fait noir, puis gris, puis le jour se lève pendant que vous marchez — et le sol sous vos chaussures est une croûte noire qui sonne creux. Quand la Fournaise est en éruption, on la voit d’en haut : une fontaine orange dans un cratère noir, à quelques centaines de mètres. Il n’y a rien à Maurice qui ressemble à ça.From the Pas de Bellecombe, the walk down into the enclosure takes two hours. It is dark, then grey, then the day comes up while you are still walking — and the ground under your boots is a black crust that rings hollow. When la Fournaise is erupting you see it from above: an orange fountain in a black crater, a few hundred metres off. There is nothing in Mauritius that looks like this.

Le volcan ferme. Quand l’éruption est forte ou que le temps se gâte, l’enclos est interdit et personne ne discute avec la préfecture — nous vous le dirons le matin même, et nous basculons sur les cirques. La marche n’est pas une promenade : quatre heures aller-retour sur de la roche coupante, à 2 300 mètres. Et Mafate ne se rejoint qu’à pied ou en hélicoptère, jamais en voiture, quoi qu’en dise la brochure.The volcano closes.
